Chant Om Namah Shivaya on Mahashivaratri
This post of the Mahashivaratri is specially written for spiritually inclined people who do not wish to fast or perform a specific ritual or chant lengthy prayers, but still, wish to worship and meditate on Shiva in all his glory on this most auspicious and sacred occasion.
This year Mahashivaratri is on the 21st of Feb 2020, the Chaturdashi Tithi commences at 5.20 PM on the 21st and concludes at 7.02 PM on the 22nd of Feb.
Most Shiv Bhakts would no doubt have ear-marked this most sacred Tithi for special Prarthanas, Mantras, and ritual for worshiping their Ishta Devta.
Coming back to the first point, spiritually inclined people can also ear-mark Mahashivaratri as the day on which they commence a new beginning life for spiritual advancement and upliftment of their consciousness to higher levels of existence.
These spiritually inclined persons can chant the Mool Mantra of Lord Shiva – Om Namah Shivaya ||
Many, people simply chant the Om Namah Shivaya || ॐ नमः शिवाय || Mantra mechanically as some sort of prayer to salute or adore Shiva for getting his blessings in order to get something, like money, wealth, love or any other thing desired by them.
The deeper meaning of this Shiva Mantra is that the practitioner is surrendering and merging his consciousness with Lord Shiva who is the inner or outer [meaning cosmic] consciousness that gives life to everything in the Universe.
The Mantra is contemplation or meditation on the “life or source energy” or the “Prana” that makes you or everything else in the Universe, including all the planets and stars contained in the Universe live.
The Mantra also symbolizes Panch Tatva or the 5 Elements – Prithvi, Jal, Vayu, Agni and Akash or Earth, Water, Air, Fire and the Sky that makeup everything contained in the Universe, including the human body.
If the practitioner starts chanting this Panchakshara or 5 words Shiva Mantra by truly understanding its real meaning, then it will bring a miraculous change in his thinking in a very short period of time. This change can happen even immediately, depending upon the main-set of the practitioner. This is one of the fastest and easiest methods of spiritual advancement.

।
