Mantra for Yama Tarpan on Narak Chaturdashi
Narak Chaturdashi-Yama Tarpan of Diwali is on the 10th of November 2015. This auspicious Tithi is also called as the Kali Chaudas or the last day before the Amavasya or the New Moon as per the Hindu Lunar Calendar. This auspicious day of Diwali, which is celebrated as the day on, which Kali Mata destroyed the Demon Narkasura, symbolic of the end of dark times. Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated in most parts of India according to the local customs and traditions, which prevail in that region.
Yama Tarpan is an important ritual, which is performed on the day of Narak Chaturdashi. This ritual is performed to seek the blessings of Yama, the God of Death, who judges Souls as per the Karma or Deeds performed by them. Yama Tarpan is an annual ritual, which seeks to wash and eradicate the Bad Karma [Sins and Mis-Deeds] of the year gone-by and to avert untimely demise, calamity, harm and danger in the coming year.
A simple way to perform Yama Tarpan, which means offering water to Yama, is described here. Yama Tarpan is performed in the morning after Abhyanga Snana. Abhyanga Snana means applying Uatne all over the body before taking a bath. Uatne is a powder easily available during Diwali, which contains Sandalwood Powder, Camphor, Haldi and some other ingredients. If the father of the person has expired, then he should offer Akshata- Rice Grains to the water. Others should offer Til [Sesame Seeds] to the water. The ritual of Yama Tarpan should be performed facing the South and then the after performing the Yama Tarpan, the Mantra [ contains the names of Yam Devta] shown by me in the image should be chanted 11 times. The water should be taken in a Puja Thali or Kalash.
