The real purpose of the Nira Radia tapes
The Niira Radia tape scandal, probably India’s biggest tape scandal has nailed the role of a section of the Media, in what normally happens under the guise of the respectable name of lobbying. This could just be a tip of the iceberg. The C.B.I. has claimed that they have as many as 5, 851, tapes recorded conversations of Radia.
India leading industrialist and Chairman of the Tata Group Ratan Tata, whose conversations with Radia also figure amongst the leaked transcripts, has moved the Supreme Court of India, for protection of his privacy. The tapes hint at Tata’s involvement in the 2G spectrum scam, though not conclusively. The tapes never the less portray him in bad light as just another run of the mill high society gossipmonger, manipulator and news planter. This is not good publicity for a man of his position.
The most disgusting thing about this scandal is that barring a few exceptions, there has been a total black out of this scandal by both the Print and Electronic Media. The Media normally hungry for even minor scoops, termed as “Breaking News”, has shown its true colors. This is understandable as some famous media persons, always hogging the limelight are at the receiving end.
What becomes clear is that the leakage of the tapes has been done in a selective manner. The C.B.I probably has a lot of dope on a whole lot of others. When I said that this could be the tip of an iceberg, I meant that the government might have in it procession a huge amount of such transcripts of other power brokers like Radia as well.
The media which of late had taken the high moral ground in exposing the corruption scams of the commonwealth games, the 2G spectrum scam as well as other smaller scams like the Adarsh society and Yeddyurappa scams, has been stunned into silence.
Is this just a warning to the media to lay off? A warning to fall in line or face the consequences. Have just a selected few including Tata have been made an example of? Will the almost daily dose of scams being exposed come to a standstill? One does not know, one has to only wait and watch.
Those without any skeletons in the closet should at least stand up. This is probably what Barack Obama probably meant when he quoted; RABINDRANATH TAGORE ‘Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high’, even before mentioning Mahatma Gandhi, in his address to the Joint Session of Parliament.
The two main pawns in the Commonwealth Games Scam and the 2G Spectrum Scam, Kalmadi and Raja have till date not even been questioned. Kalmadi has been given a clean chit and excluded from the F.I.R.This is probably because they know much more than their underlings and are likely to spill the beans on the ultimate beneficiaries. No doubt after the uproar a token exercise at questioning or even inclusion in the F.I.R. is likely.
