Khatu Shyam Aarti-English-Hindi

The Khatu Shyam Aarti is recited in praise of Barbarik, the son of Ghatotkacha and the grandson of Bhima.During the Mahabharata war Barbarik wanted to fight on the side of which ever side which was the weaker. This was the Guru Dakshina sought by Barbarik's Guru; hence Barbarik had no other option other than take the side of the weaker side. However the power of Barbarik was such that which ever side he supported would automatically become the stronger side.

There was no one who could stand against Barbarik.Thus to avoid the participation of Barbarik in the war Krishna disguised as a Brahman tested Barbarik.Barbarik pleased with him promised him that he would grant him anything he wished. The disguised Krishna asked him to give him his head.

The shocked Barbarik asked the Brahman to disclose his true identity, Krishna then showed him his divine form or the Vishwa Roopa.Krishna explained to him that the side he supported would automatically be the stronger one, hence he would have to constantly change sides, and in this process he would eventually destroy both the sides. Hence Krishna explained to him there was no other option for him but to sacrifice his head.

After Barbarik sacrificed his head Krishna gave him a boon that in Kaliyug he would be known by Krishna’s name. All prayers of the devotees of Barbarik would be answered as if the prayer was dedicated to Krishna himself. In Kaliyug the power of Barbarik is the same as that of Krishna, there is no difference.

Barbarik in Kaliyug is known as Khatu Shyam.
